Avoiding the 'UNPRODUCTIVE TRAP'

It is very common to fall prey to the Unproductive TRAP, while you are actually looking to develop productivity habits.

In quest of being productive at work, we often spend working too much, focusing more on quantity and deteriorating quality, or anxiety disorder or being hard on self.

Below is a list of some unproductive tendencies, that we often pick up unintentionally, and affect our quality of lives:

  1. All work and no play makes Jack an incompetent boy: To be productive does not mean you push yourself to work for 12 or 13 hours straight. It may seem easy to maintain that for a couple of days- but this forced indulgence will only leave you exhausted and you will come crashing on the stuff . Don't just put in hard work, work it the smart way. Observe your productive streak in the day, work in those slots and get maximum done.
  2. Productivity Panic: To enhance productivity, we are always on the run, making choices, taking decisions, and burning out. The panic and anxiety of 'what if-it doesn't go as planned' or 'what if-the execution fails' keeps feeding our monkey mind, wrecking our peace of mind, and hence affecting our actual efficiency to work.
  3. Too many goals spoil the broth: Setting too many vague goals, scatters your focus and hence you fail to achieve. Having set limited goals with fixed deadlines in order of priorities is the essence of being productive. A focused individual is one that knows the first, second, and third things to be done on any given day. Quality trumps quantity.
  4. DONE is better than Perfect: Do NOT fall prey to the concept of PERFECTIONISM. We go over the task again and again, scrutinise every detail million times, wasting time that could have been used for other urgent tasks. DO IT>REVIEW IT>EXECUTE IT.
  5. Get over SHINY DISCO BALL Syndrome: Chasing productivity can lead to over committing- excitement can easily get you to say YES to every idea that you come across. And when we are not completely involved in a few committed assignments, we tend to chase the next shiny ball that catches our eye and attention. Shiny Disco Ball can be a serious syndrome giving you stress, anxiety and instability hence deteriorating your productive levels of work. Pause-think-commit is a smarter way of saving your energy and focus for the right tasks. Break down the projects into small set of tasks so that you are not overwhelmed by them.

Don't just imitate the productivity hacks blindly- what works for them, won't necessarily work for you!
Develop your own system to work smarter, better and efficiently. It takes time but it is worth it.
